Our Faith Story

Beginnings
Third Baptist Church was organized in the Daviess County Courthouse on Sunday, August 9th, 1896. That afternoon, roughly 2000 people gathered in the Sam Jones Tabernacle (on the northwest corner of Locust Street and the railroad) to witness the formal ceremony of recognizing Third Baptist Church. At this gathering, attenders pledged $18,500 for the erection of a house of worship. Dr. F.D. Hale, the congregation’s first pastor, oversaw the construction of the sanctuary, which began on October 7, 1896.

Footprint in Owensboro
Third Baptist Church was primarily responsible for establishing other churches in Owensboro. A mission was started in the Seven Hills community on November 1, 1901. Seven years later, Seven Hills Church was organized with 31 charter members, most from Third Baptist Church.
Eaton Memorial Church was organized in 1908 with a majority of its constituent members from Third Baptist. Buena Vista Church was constituted in 1922. The houses and lots acquired in the area by Third Baptist Church were deeded to Buena Vista.

Pastors

In our 127 year history, Third Baptist Church has worshiped our great God, spread the gospel of Christ, and ministered to many in need. While we celebrate the accomplishments of the past, we recognize that tarrying too long can be a hindrance to the present and the future. The present challenges us and the future calls us. TBC recognizes our current mission – Trust God, Bless Others, Celebrate Grace – and with God’s strength we will meet this moment with courage and conviction.
